St Mary’s Church Refurbishment

Client:
Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne
Architect:
Smith + Tracey Architects

Following an unfortunate arsonist attack, the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne decided to turn a negative into a positive and give St Mary’s Church a substantial refurbishment an internal rebuild of some areas to provide existing parish members updated facilities and to assist with attracting new visitors from the community.

The interior was extensively damaged by fire and smoke, with substantial damage to its ceiling. The building was decontaminated, ceiling structure and altar rebuilt, and front entrance windows refurbished or replaced in full.

Sections of flooring were replaced along with the raised altar platform, and timber feature panels were detailed in the ceilings over the altar and main entrance. Other works included a full electrical rewire and modifications to provide compliant disability access throughout the facility.
