Sillitoe Reserve Pavilion Redevelopment

Client:
Bayside City Council
Architect:
Brand Architects

The previous Sillitoe Reserve Pavilion consists of two separate buildings that have served the community since the 1970s, supporting a range of community programs, predominantly junior and senior soccer, and cricket club activities. The facilities were determined as no longer fit-for-purpose to service the needs of current tenants and anticipated future demands and were selected as a high priority for replacement as part of BCC Accelerated Sportsground Pavilion Improvement Masterplan.

Designed by Brand Architects, the new pavilion includes a large entry foyer, new kitchen/kiosk and bar, a large social function space opening onto a new paved event/viewing area, four new change rooms and associated amenities, umpire facilities, first aid room, plant and cleaner’s rooms, and two large storage bays.

In addition, to reflect current expectations of the community, the new building includes considerable Environmental Sensitive Design (ESD) elements, inclusive of; 4 large rainwater tanks for rainwater harvesting, mechanically operated ventilation louvres, roof-mounted solar panels, high efficiency LED lighting throughout, careful placement of highlight windows providing ample natural light, use of motion sensor lighting, ample insulation to minimize heating/cooling costs, specification of high recycled content building products and 80% of demolished content from the old pavilion being recycled.

The scope of works included installation of mass timber construction structural elements. Working with Vicbeam to develop final shop drawings, our team installed six GL15 Tasmanian Oak Glulam Beams, each weighing over 500kg, which doubled as both key structural elements and an architectural feature of the completed pavilion.

The project was completed over three stages, inclusive; Stage One, provision of temporary club facilities; Stage Two, demolition of the existing pavilion buildings, followed by construction of the new; Stage Three, removal of temporary club facilities and completion of landscape package.
