Parkdale Yacht Club Redevelopment

Client:
City of Kingston
Architect:
Haskell Architects

Originally established in 1946, the previous Parkdale Yacht Club had served the community well and was much loved by members. However, with significant upgrades required, members voted on a complete redevelopment of the site to ensure the club’s future and provide new, modern, and compliant facilities and fit-for-purpose amenities.

Located right on busy Parkdale foreshore, the redevelopment posed many challenges including tight and restrictive access conditions, maintaining public access to the foreshore boardwalk and beach, demolition of the existing facility inclusive of the safe removal and disposal of hazardous materials, all while adhering to strict cultural heritage and environmental overlays.

Construction of the new club building included CFA piling, suspended and on-ground concrete slabs and stairs across two levels, use of reinforced core filled block work walls and lift shaft, installation of aluminium Permalite wall cladding, frameless performance double glazing windows and use of stainless-steel handrails and balustrades. Enhanced sustainability measures were also considered and specified including use of natural ventilation, roof-top rainwater harvesting, water efficient utilities and energy efficient sensor lighting and air conditioning system. The project achieved an ’excellent’ on the BESS sustainability rating tool.

Completed in March 2021, the new facility features upgraded administration, social, meeting, training, and race control areas on level one and, at ground level, new boat storage, change rooms and toilets, extensive storage areas and DDA compliant lift access.
