Dunlop Sports Pavilion

Client:
City of Stonnington
Architect:
Williams Ross Architects

The Dunlop Sports Pavilion is located in Melbourne’s leafy Malvern East, surrounded by an extensive outdoor recreation area which provides ample space to service the needs of numerous community sporting groups.

The scope of works included demolition of the outdated existing facility, then construction of a new building with enhanced facilities including large function room, social room, commercial kitchen, kiosk, umpire change rooms, club storage and administration office.

Of paramount importance was the foresight of council, club members and design team to include specific change rooms and amenities for women to accommodate for a projected growth in female sport participation, helping to support gender equality within the tenant clubs.

The new building features a mix of timber and aluminium cladding, full height reflective glass panels, detailed blockwork, and bespoke aluminium shaded entranceway. The design achieved several circulation and environmental goals including; improved user access; upgraded connection to adjacent spaces; maximum penetration of natural daylight; improved ventilation and water harvesting while minimising energy usage and maintenance requirements.

Construction activities were carried out in a live environment while allowing the continuous use of the sports grounds and minimal impact on the adjacent railway carpark amenity.
