Bren's Pavilion Redevelopment

Client:
City of Melbourne
Architect:
City Design Studio

Situated in Melbourne’s beautiful, heritage listed Royal Park, Bren’s Pavilion is a heavily used community facility servicing numerous local sports and recreation teams across both summer and winter seasons. The previous building also facilitated other business and cultural events during the year.

With refurbishment works previously undertaken over 15 years ago, the City of Melbourne (COM) in partnership with The Victorian Government, resolved to redevelop the previous pavilion to provide updated, fit-for-purpose facilities to service both current and anticipated future demands of the community. In particular, the capacity to adequately service the future needs of both female and junior sports initiatives was highlighted as a key priority.

The scope of work was completed over two stages. Stage one involved: decommissioning of the existing pavilion; retrieval and storage of specified items for reuse; partial demolition of the existing pavilion building; construction of new amenities including 8 large gender-neutral accessible change rooms, showers, and toilets, 2 umpire change rooms, first aid room, upgrades to current social/kitchen/kiosk areas; upgrading utilities and services including new solar generation and energy-efficient systems; construction of new asphalt ring road and new parking.

Following completion of stage one works and commissioning of the new pavilion, stage two involved decommissioning and demolishing of the existing public toilet facility, installation of a reinforced turf overflow parking area, followed by bulk landscaping and planting.

All works were undertaken within a heritage protection environment, with strict environmental considerations including the protection of several existing significant Gum and Elm trees within the building compound.
